Original Recipe:

Oatmeal Cookies:

Watkins Cook Book; 1948

1 c butter, creamed
1 c brown sugar
add 1/2 tsp soda dissolved in 1/2 c hot water
2 c ground oatmeal
2 c flour (sifted)
2 tsp Watkins baking powder
1 tsp Watkins vanilla


1 pkg dates, cleaned and stoned
1 tsp Watkins vanilla
1 c pastry flour (sifted)
1 c cold water
Watkins vanilla

Blend all ingredients. Chill dough, roll quite thin, cut dough, add filling, cover with dough. Bake in a moderate oven.

For the filling; cook mixture until quite thick. Cool, then spread one half of cookies and cover with thin dough.

Becki's Modified Recipe:

Peanut Butter Newtons:

Cream together 1 cup butter & 1 cup brown sugar.
Add 1/2 tsp soda dissolved in 1/2 c hot water
Grind 2 1/2 cups oatmeal to get 2 cups ground oatmeal.
Add 1 1/2 tsp Watkins pure vanilla & 1 tsp Watkins vanilla nut.
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Allow to cool.
Roll out 1/2 of dough 1/8 inch thick on cookie sheet.
Spread thinly with chunky peanut butter.
Roll out rest of dough to 1/8 inch thick and put over peanut butter.
Bake 20 to 25 minutes.
After taking cout of oven spread with honey . Allow to sit 5-10 minutes, spread with more honey. Honey will soak into cookies overnight.
Cut into squares.

Cookies had to much flour and tasted dry. Could use more peanut butter.
